Being able to convert units between English and Metrics (and System International) is a fundamental concept in science. The common language in science is the System International (which is very similar to the metric system) and all scientists use these units as a standard. However, some regions of the world (like the United States) still use english units as a standard which means everything must be converted into metrics or SI (System Internationale).
